20 March - 1 April 2013 ESUA successfully completed a study tour to Cuba with a new extended tour programme. The tour was the 8th in row organized by Claus Zapffe, with 10 participants from Norway, United Kingdom, Romania and Estonia. The next tours are sheduled for Autumn 2013 and Spring 2014.
The programme included an introduction to the history of Urbanism and Architecture of Havana, Cienfuegos and Trinidad, all of them listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. It involved insights into the regeneration of Old Havana, and a tour by rental cars to two smaller historic towns, Trinidad and Cienfuegos.
As an experiment, for the first time we included Vienales, Tropes de Collantes and Varadero in the tour programme. The expansion of the program was rated a success by the participants, and we will take the experince onwards in future tour programmes.
Our expert guide was a recognized Cuban architect working with restoration of historic buildings at the Officina del Historador in Old Havana. Hernando has excellent English language capabilities and extensive knowledge of Cuban history, architecture and urbanism.
Our participants have had a wide range of different backgrounds, with the common nominator that they have been culturally interested people.
