ECHOE Hunedoara Summer School

The Romanian office of ESUA hosted on 3 - 8 September 2012 a one-week Summer School within the framework of the Education on Heritage and Outdoor Education Project (ECHOE) in and around the city of Hunedoara, Romania. The Summer School had 28 Romanian and international participants from educational, cultural, social and touristic organizations, 8 local support staff, and engaged more than 100 local inhabitants in its events.
The following ECHOE project partners were represented at the Summer School:

Day 1
The participants and the organizations were presented within a theoretical session where the principles behind ECHOE were presented in a number of presentations. At the end of the first day participants divided into three work groups, each assigned to one of the three sites. The workgroups were headed by a heritage coordinator and an education coordinator. The three sites were the Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa Roman archeological site, the Cerişor village in the Lelese mountain commune, and the Hunyad Castle in Hunedoara.

Day 2
Each work group visited its assigned site. During the day-long visits the participants interacted with the communities connected to the site. Also they were able to interact with the material and immaterial heritage within the sites. Thus allowing the participants to interact and understand the local cultural context and have a clearer picture about the place where they would create their programs for the valorization of the local cultural patterns, heritage and outdoor elements. At the end of the visits, to facilitate a better workflow of future activities, participants wrote down all relevant information in the "Guide for the Study Visit". The information containd in the Guide would be later on used to better shape the educational programes for the growth, conservation and restoration of the visited sites.

Day 3

In group work, Information from the Guide was synthesized into information on which the educational programms were developed. Using a Program Development Layout, each work group developed 3 possible educational programs in such a way as to valorize the local heritage, to grow a newer, better and more positive rapport between the local community and tourists with the heritage site. The programs would also focus on outdoor education tailored for adult learners. To oversee the activity in each group a heritage expert and an educational expert were provided in the three teams. At the end of the third day the 3 programs of each team, a total of nine programs, were discussed and polished.

Day 4
All the participants were taken on-site to Cerisor Village and Huniady Castle. At each visited site, one program was chosen and applied. The participants became adult learners and interacted with the heritage and outdoor elements to learn and improve their key competences.

At the Cerişor Village the program that was presented was called "A Wonderful Day Outdoors", and featured a 'treasure hunt' where the treasure was information about the lifestyle, work and habits of the local community. The adult learners walked and visited the major sites of the community in Cerişor Village, while, at the same time, interacting and communicating with the people. Then the two other programs were presented: "Young Adults Making Ţuica" and "Educating for Education". 

At the Hunyad Castle the presentation was in reverse. First the two programs were presented in the shadow of the Castle. These were: "Living History - Metallurgy Alive" and "Living History for Guides". The participants were then taken inside the Castle and during a normal presentation of the Castle by the history expert the third program was triggered: "Living History - The Siege!". In this one the participants, turned adult learners again, were involved in a scenario where the Castle will come under siege. The Castle's re-enactment team was helped in the task of preparation by the adult learners by participating in medieval military training, weapon and armor repair and medieval handy-crafts.

Day 5
The work group assigned to Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa presented their programs. During "Carpe historiam! Carpe diem!" the adult learners were introduced into the life of a citizen in the capital of roman Dacia. Different interactive activities were done to transfer information and learn about the heritage of the site. The two other programs presented were: "Homines in Horeum sunt!" and " Vademecum ... Discover, learn and share". After the presentations a final session was held for conclusions, feedback and farewells. Most of the participants departed the following day.

The Summer School also included cultural visits and events at the Deva Citadel, the Cincis Lake (natural heritage), the Ghelari hilltop natural site, and the Hunyad Castle.
